Joined the Royal Irish Fusiliers, 1889; joined 19th Bengal Lancers, Indian Army 1892; Squadron Officer, attached to Burma Military Police 1895; Assistant Commandant, Bhamo Battalion, Burma Military Police 1899; Staff Captain, 1st Peshawar Division; Deputy Adjutant Quarter Master General, Bazaar Valley Field Force 1908; Brigade Major, Bannu Brigade, Northern Army Troops 1908-1909; General Staff Officer, H.Q., Southern Army, India 1912-1914; Commandant 19th Bengal Lancers, 1915; Brigade Commander, Secunderbad (9th) Cavalry Brigade, 2nd Indian Cavalry Division 1916-1918; Brevet Colonel 1917; C.B. 1918, C.M.G. 1919; Commanded the 8th Mounted Brigade, 1st Mounted Division (later 4th Cavalry Division) 1918; Major-General, Commanding Meerut Cavalry Brigade, 1922.
