Remembered Today:

The Fisherman's Hut

Bad, sad, news from the peninsula last week; a landmark and link with the landing has been levelled by officialdom's bulldozer. I am given to understand that the Fisherman's Hut has gone.

In 1915 it was probably sited a little nearer to the waterline; be that as it may. The feature nevertheless provided a useful reference point on an iconic landscape.

And what of the fisherman and the family who have used the 'hut' for so many generations?

The worst is yet to come, I am afraid. The new plan is to establish a cable car system at Anzac. Not to mention new Turkish cemeteries that are being built.

The Fisherman's Hut today.

The cottage had been in its past location for about 85 years, having been built by the same family that had lived on the site since before the war.

"The new plan is to establish a cable car system at Anzac."

Oh dear, that dreadful plan has been resurrected has it? It came to life more than 20 years ago, faded away, came back to life, then disappeared again.

Do you have more details on this, such as the planned location of the cable car line? The original suggestion was to run a ski lift type line from around Embarkation Pier to Chunuk Bair.

Hi Bill,

It appeared in last year's annual activity report which was uploaded to website of Alan Baskanligi (see: https://catab.ktb.gov.tr/TR-159996/faaliyet-raporlari.html). The planned route is apparently Kabatepe-Conkbayiri.

Thank you Emrezmen

This seems to be the report - see page 20 [p.23 of the pdf]

https://catab.ktb.gov.tr/Eklenti/82315,faaliyetraptarihialanbaskanligi-onayli-1pdf.pdf?0

the Turkish text translates as:-

Kabatepe-Conkbayırı ropeway Project - The final report phase of the Kabatepe-Conkbayırı ropeway feasibility project has been completed. It has been planned in order to protect the existing elements and nature from the damage caused by motor vehicle traffic, especially during busy visit periods, on the alternative travel route created, and to facilitate the perception of the Historical Site and the Çanakkale Wars for all visitors by providing the airborne description of the battlefields.

It is worth noting that also mentioned in the above report is:- Access to the HMS Majestic wreck will be provided, which is planned to be opened for diving tourism. Necessary infrastructure services for the pier and underwater park etc etc etc

Thanks for this Emre, useful even if the information is most unwelcome.

My version of the translation says cable car rather than ropeway but otherwise is similar to Michael's.

As to the bit on :Access to the HMS Majestic wreck will be provided, which is planned to be opened for diving tourism. Necessary infrastructure services for the pier and underwater park etc etc etc..."

the etc etc has been completed, with a large pier having been built in-between V and W Beaches - creating vast clouds of sediment in the water and clouding over W Beach for weeks - with the intention of having  tour boats use it to take visitors over the wreck. A road running from below Helles Memorial leads to the lighthouse, where viewing platforms and stairs down to the pier have also been built. Though completed months ago, the pier has not been activated.

Many thanks for that up-date Bill - Even though it cannot by any stretch be called 'good news'

I hate to think where the powers-that-be might turn next
