emam Posted 11 September , 2021 Share Posted 11 September , 2021 Yes, I have seen photos of a man in one uniform where there's no trace of any records for it, nothing showing on medal records. His medals were awarded for another regiment. I have two different photos both from trusted sources. Off the top of my head but could be on the wrong person, he served in the Northumbrian Cycling Corps and then must have been transferred. The NCC isn't mentioned anywhere but he's wearing the cap badge. I was told a group of them were together in the cadets pre war and served in different regiments. From Durham one went to the Kings Liverpool Regt.
emam Posted 11 September , 2021 Share Posted 11 September , 2021 The medal card above isn't him. He lived in Lancashire. I tried to post my last reply earlier but it wouldn't save.
Sean Kennedy Posted 11 September , 2021 Author Share Posted 11 September , 2021 (edited) I have every ''John Sharples'', not just DLI, written down from ancestry.com and divided by regiment. Subtracting ones with non-Northumberland/Newcastle area address, officers, ones who were KIA and ones with a Mons medal (he wasn't a regular) and it is still a massive list! The only two in DLI are ##26117 (Blackburn however) and 327634. Edited 11 September , 2021 by Sean Kennedy

Then either he didn't receive a medal (therefore wasn't posted overseas) or was transferred and qualified for a medal through another regiment? There are only two ''J'' or ''John Sharples/s'' I have pulled up for DLI, one Blackburn and him (there is no reason why he'd add a middle name as none appears in his census data). Unless he did something odd like change his name or join whilst in Lancashire and change origins for whatever reason!
Pat Atkins Posted 11 September , 2021 Share Posted 11 September , 2021 @emam is right about Lancashire (and no doubt was posting the following information when it wouldn't save) - FMP has some service papers for 327634 John Sharples (originally 5131 2/7th Cheshires) which give his home address as 252 Tottington Rd, Harwood near Bolton; nok mother Mary. Served in Egypt from 15/2/18, to Salonika Nov 18, invalided to UK 30/10/18. Image from Find My Past. I expect you've tried this, but I've sometimes tracked down men from infantry battalions on the Labour Corps medal rolls after they were reassigned following wounds, sickness and/or the effects of age, etc. Good luck. Definitely not him then! Either he transferred or he didn't serve overseas. Got to be one of those, unless there is something weird like a name change. I did have a theory that, being a miner, he may have been stolen for the RE? Thank you Pat and @emamby the way. Sean Kennedy Posted 11 September , 2021 Author Share Posted 11 September , 2021 It demonstrates the different experiences researching soldiers, I have one ancestor whose complete service record exists, although I lack photos (I have one but am struggling to identify him on it as I only have one other for cross reference, poor quality and in later life). Also consulted War Diaries. I know the minute he joined his Bn, the company he joined and the exact minute he was wounded (5.01pm)! It is remarkable how much I have constructed. I have one ancestor whose service record didn't survive but a lot has been extrapolated from other stuff - medals, casualty returns - and the Bn has been discovered, as has his death date and the fact it was at battle x. I have two photos of him, identified by cap badge. And I have THIS ancestor where I have four pieces of photographic evidence, two with cap (DLI) and which has been certified to his civilian record, yet literally nothing can be pulled up! Sean Kennedy Posted 18 September , 2021 Author Share Posted 18 September , 2021 It probably means absolutely zilch but there was a photograph of a group scene from post war (probably nearer ww2) which was stuck in with the photographs. Think it is just some employees and cannot spot John/Jack on there - indeed, they're all younger than he would've been at that time. Struggling to read handwriting? Doubt it means anything but maybe someone on here will have more success?

TullochArd Posted 19 September , 2021 Share Posted 19 September , 2021 (edited) "??scoll of River ?????. High Seat. April 26/47" (42?) There is a High Seat (709m) which is the fourth highest fell in the Yorkshire Dales. It's a very popular walk. There are some curiously unique names around this area but I couldn't find a match for the River above. emam Posted 19 September , 2021 Share Posted 19 September , 2021 lutescoll, lintscoll, butesroll, binteroll, cuteroll of River from High Seat April 26 1947. On the first word the first letter could be any of c/l/b the second an u. At first glance the first word second line looks like Green, but I think it's "from" with the loop at the top which would make the G being a mark on the paper. I'm hoping this will post as I'm having trouble with replying on here.
