Remembered Today:

CAPT John Cottier Richardson, 2 Manchesters, KIA 4 Oct 18

Don't suppose anyone is going near TNA at the moment?

I'm in Australia and was hoping to determine which unit CAPT John Cottier Richardson was serving with when he died and when he was transferred to them.

He'd spent a lot of the war on attachment in Africa. I don't beleive he was with 2 Manchesters at the time he died as they were not in action.

He has papers at TNA and would very much appreciate a lookup/copy of the relevant pages.

You may be able to get the information from the Monthly Army Lists

There was generally a section at the back of  each edition, of deaths during the past month. There is generally also information about Regiments in Africa.

See Monthly Army List from the FIBIS Fibiwiki page Army List for British Army online

https://wiki.fibis.org/w/Army_List_for_British_Army_online#Monthly_Army_List

Also includes a link to the National Library of Scotland databases  which are easier to Search.   However  if you can't find what you want by Searching, you should browse and  I find the NLS databases are not easy to browse.

They also have service records for when he joined the Manchesters. Before being an officer

Thanks Mauree/George, much appreciated. I have all the Ancestry and Fold material.

I suspect he might have been attached to the 21st Bn at Beaurevior when killed. Only way to confirm will be his Service Papers (I hope). Unfortunately the 21st Bn War Diary is missing between the Dec 17 and Sep 18 and he doesn't rate a mention in other units or Bde diaries. They'd not long arrived from Italy when they and the 20th Bn went into action at Beaurevoir.

Hi probate says attached 16th Bn, but neither the 16th nor his parent Bn the 2nd were in action when he died.

Thanks George,

All ears. I've tried everything I can think of apart from the Service Record!
