Hi,

I have just bought an Australian WW1 Lithgow bayonet dated 1917. Lithgow bayonets aren’t my strong suit. I have more knowledge in the British side of bayonets. Could someone tell me a bit about it? Also what does the 3MD mean in the serial num? Here are some photos

Nice bayonet, both parts looks like australian proofed, the MD numbers of bayonet and scabbard are missmatch probably.

The first SMLE I ever owned was a 1917 Lithgow purchased for the princely sum of $35 dollars in 1994. I still have it, and I still cannot bring myself to replace the broken handguard

(although I do have the part!)

It has now been joined by a number of other Lithgow rifles.

Matt,

You have got yourself a very nice pairing there!

Both made at Lithgow, both in good shape.

Note that your Lithgow blade is blued from tip to cross-guard, rather than half of the ricasso to cross-guard which was the British practice.

Regards,

JMB
