trajan Posted 5 August , 2021 Share Posted 5 August , 2021 WR is indeed Worcestershire Regiment, but as you say, there was no 4 (reserve) batt. Unless we are dealing with a 'ghost' unit? One that was planned to be formed but then never was? Worcestershire contributed a number of territorial batt., and there was a 1st Reserve (Garrison) batt; as well as a 5th and 6th (Reserve) Battalions and even a 12th and 13th (Reserve) Battalions! shippingsteel Posted 5 August , 2021 Share Posted 5 August , 2021 (edited) With this bayonet my first thoughts were a Pre-war (1910/11) unit marking to the 4th Batt. Worcestershire Regiment (WR) while also being a "non-standard" British Army stamping possibly with an Indian connection.? Doing some minimal Google research suggests this could be the case. The 4th Battalion was indeed in India during this period and played a part in the pomp and ceremony of the King George instalment in that country. Perhaps a spare R for Royal was added for good measure for this occasion.?!! Cheers, SS http://www.worcestershireregiment.com/wr.php?main=inc/bat_4 Edited 5 August , 2021 by shippingsteel
trajan Posted 6 August , 2021 Share Posted 6 August , 2021 (edited) An ingenious suggestion SS! Did the 4 Worcs in India have SMLE's though? Also, I do wonder if an armourer would risk something or the other for lèse-majesté, adding a 'Royal' where none was warranted!
