martin75 Posted 4 August , 2021 Share Posted 4 August , 2021 Hello, by consulting the reports of various ships participating in the operations in the Dardanelles, I am a little lost in front of the references of locations of certain Turkish howitzer batteries. For example on March 2, 1915, report from HMS Cornwallis: various positions V85, 2D85, 2Q79, 2R80 are mentioned; the last two being reported in the Erenkuy sector (Asian coast). Unfortunately, the different maps consulted do not help me to understand the interpretation of the square grid maps used for the period february - march 1915. If anyone can give me some help he will be welcome ! Best regards Claude
michaeldr Posted 5 August , 2021 Share Posted 5 August , 2021 Claude, Can you recheck your source and details please? I've found an artillery map with alphabetic square references, however the numbering does not match-up. Your “2Q79, 2R80 are mentioned; the last two being reported in the Erenkuy sector (Asian coast)” doesn't seem to fit either. It would surely have been very confusing to have had two so different alphabetical reference systems, even if there were successive and not concurrent. regards, Michael
charlie2 Posted 5 August , 2021 Share Posted 5 August , 2021 The batteries are marked on this map from the „Die Mittelmeer Division“ of the German Naval OH, obviously not 6 figure grid references but maybe of some help. Charlie
charlie2 Posted 5 August , 2021 Share Posted 5 August , 2021 And a better one, unfortunately in 2 parts, from „Der Kampf um die Meerengen“

michaeldr Posted 5 August , 2021 Share Posted 5 August , 2021 (edited) V85, 2D85, 2Q79, 2R80 I think that this is the chart which the ship was using at that time The alpha refs are along the bottom edge, and when the letter sequence is repeated, then it is prefixed with 2 The numbers run down the left hand edge I have circled with green the four squares that you are looking for, and the smaller of the two crops gives you some details indicating that the chart was in use at the time you are investigating. I hope that this is of help regards Michael Edited 5 August , 2021 by michaeldr
michaeldr Posted 6 August , 2021 Share Posted 6 August , 2021 Missing from my post of yesterday is the credit for this chart. It is to be found on the dvd 'Gallipoli: Military mapping 1914-1918' which was produced by the WFA in conjunction with the IWM. It should still be available from the WFA, and it is currently available from the Gallipoli Association; https://www.gallipoli-association.org/the-association/quartermasters-store/binders-cds/gallipoli-mapping-the-front/ On the disc, this particular map bears the ref No. M_025891
