Hi . Looking for information on Pte 15021 Leonard James Chapman, 7th Royal Berkshire Regiment. I have his pension papers that state he was awarded the MM on 7.1. 1919 for gallantry and devotion to duty in Salonika, the award appearing in the supplement to the London Gazette 3 . 7. 1919. Forces war records  states that he received an award from France 17. 3. 1920.. I have not been able to verify any award from France. He was wounded GSW to the right hand in Salonika on 25.9.1918 and i wonder if this is the action he received the MM for . I have the book The Royal Berkshire Regiment in the first world war, 7th Battalion, which states on this day the Battalion game under fire from Bulgarian machine guns, 1 officer wounded, 2 ORs KIA and 12 ORs wounded. He was born in Tilehurst, Reading around 1897. Any help or extra information on Pte Chapman would be a great help. Although the 7th Battalion book confirms the award of the MM , there is no mention of an award from France.

This clipping courtesy FindmyPast only confirms what you already know from that nice clean surviving service record. I suspect as you do, that the MM and the wounding coincided.

The Gazette entry in 1920 is for the Medaille Militaire.  The preamble to the Gazette entry says that the awards by Allied Powers were made at various dates and so I do not think you will be able to match that award to a specific action.

Unfortunately the war diary has not been digitised: https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C4558025 or it may well mention both awards.

He entered France 19 Sept. 1915 (MIC & 1915 Star roll)

Military Medal LG 3 July 1919 (for SALONIKA): https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/issue/31430/supplement/8335

His MM Index Card at TNA has no schedule number on it. Nor has that of Pte. Arthur William May 24680.

Many thanks for all your replies and for taking the time to look for information on Pte Chapman. Great to see that forces war records was correct in stating that he was awarded a French decoration which turned out to be a Medaille Militaire. Once again thank you all.
