This chaps Soldiers Effects says 20/KLR and death "Officially accepted as 6-8-1916, Germany"

The ICRC record has him 16/KLR and:-

is that buried at Libramont (Belgium?)

and captured 6th June 1916 ?

thanks

Dave

Unfortunately, the four records covered by the cards Charlie cites above are all lists of those who had died and give no detail of capture.

As 16 Battalion was a reserve battalion, the diary of 20 Battalion may hold a clue.  The battalion lost 119 men missing on 30 July 1916, total speculation that might have been when he was taken and moved initally to Lieramont?

Not a bad guess.  The casualty numbers are for 30 July and for the period up to relief at 5 20 am on 31 July (War diary)

He must have been wounded when he was captured indeed and transported by the Germans to a Feldlazarett, where he died of his wounds. Feldlazarette were not really equipped usually for POWs (who were usually transported as quickly as possible to special sections at certain Kriegslazarette), so Feldlazarette were usually only for severe cases that couldn't be transported immediately.

(the special sections at Kriegslazarette had nothing to do with the medical care but with security, keeping special guards for wounded POWs at Feldlazarette required extra manpower, while whole sections were easier and more economical to guard)

Thank AOK for the extra information, so it looks like he was in pretty bad shape after the blackest day for the Pals.
