Royal Marine?

Hello, I'm hoping that someone will be able to tell me a little about the man in this photograph, which was taken by a photographer in Walmer, Kent sometime after 1875. Is the subject a Royal Marine? Approximately what date was this photograph taken? What else can you deduce from the uniform please? Many thanks for your help.

We can leave it for a little while but, if it's established that it's outside the forum time period, we'll have to lock it.

Thank you. I really have no idea. The photographer who took this image died in the 1930s so it could have been taken during WWI.

Probably a private RMLI. The field service cap shown worn was discontinued and replaced by the Broderick cap in 1903, This places the image well before WW1.

I think the helmet plate was used by the RMLI other ranks 1878 - 1902.
