Moonraker Posted 24 July , 2021 Share Posted 24 July , 2021 Over the last couple of days our media have carried articles about the Ordnance Survey adding local nicknames to its coastal maps, including Crazy Mary's Hole near Pakefield in Suffolk: "a World War One sentry was posted [here] in case the enemy chose this exposed spot to launch an invasion. It is said that soldiers refused to guard alone because they were frightened of the dark shadow they’d seen pacing along the cliff, wailing in despair for her lost love". I wonder if there is any contemporary evidence of soldiers' apprehension.
