MA57 Posted 23 July , 2021 Posted 23 July , 2021 Hi again, I’ve picked up a new Wilkinson pallmall bayonet dated November 1917. Could someone tell me a if it was used by Australia as it has a marking on the scabbard that I can’t really make out, it looks like an E to me. Here are some photos
JMB1943 Posted 23 July , 2021 Posted 23 July , 2021 Hello Michael, Regarding your question, you should note the following points 1. British and Australian P.1907 bayonets are hardly ever found in the scabbard with which they were originally issued (see point 8 below), 2. the letter E does not denote Australian service, 3. the metal fitting at the top of the scabbard is called the locket, while that at the bottom is the chape, 4. the "E" on the locket is an artifact formed by loss of paint from the locket, 5. unfortunately for your quest, you have just another bog standard Wilkinson-made P.'07, and 8. refer to the excellent array of photos provided by 4th Gordons in response to your post at and note especially the "2 MD 123456" type markings on the crossguards; ONLY Australia used this particular style! Likewise, note the "2 MD 123456" type markings at the flange of the locket; you would be spectacularly lucky to find a numbers-matching bayonet/scabbard pair. Read over the responses to your previous posts regarding Australian service and you can put together a checklist of markings to look out for. Good luck with your search, and you can get there by paying attention to what differentiates Australian service/ownership from British/Canadian service. Regards, JMB
shippingsteel Posted 23 July , 2021 Posted 23 July , 2021 It would need this D/\ stamp on the pommel to indicate any Australian service. (For a wartime British made bayonet) Cheers, SS
