Michael Peck Posted 23 July , 2021 Posted 23 July , 2021 Morning List, Once again your help is requested for a memorial which has me baffled. Ralph Armfield appears on the Denby Dale/Cumberworth memorial. He seems to be born 1895 Barnsley, the son of George and Minnie Armfield (nee Taylor). Both 'Pension Record' and 'Soldiers Effects' has him as Private 41593, 2nd Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment (formerly 34258 Leicestershire Regiment). Both documents have him dying 31st July 1917 but there appears no trace on either SDGW or CWGC and he appears uncommemorated, can anyone add anything please? Thanks, Mick.
ss002d6252 Posted 23 July , 2021 Posted 23 July , 2021 He was listed as wounded and missing originally, then restrospectively confirmed deceased. https://www.fold3.com/image/668176648?terms=41593,armfields,armfield As you get close to November 1918 and, later, SDGW starts to miss of many casualties. It's not a 100% record. Men being missed off the CWGC register is also not uncommon - and is often seen with men misisng from CWGC, probably due to the same source records being used. With proof of death etc the CWGC will add missing men. Craig
sadbrewer Posted 23 July , 2021 Posted 23 July , 2021 (edited) I perked up when I saw the census record that placed him in Ardsley, Barnsley where I was brought up. the memorial below was placed in The Barnsley Independent on June 8th, 1918. The family must have moved to Denby post 1911. The War diaries might provide a clue as to the operations of the 2nd Lincs on the day he went missing. Edited 23 July , 2021 by sadbrewer
Michael Peck Posted 27 July , 2021 Author Posted 27 July , 2021 My thanks to both Craig and sadbrewer. I'm sorry I didn't reply earlier (I did try) but it appears I picked up a gremlin from somewhere and the forum team have had to rescue me. Once again, appreciate your help. Mick.
Admin Michelle Young Posted 27 July , 2021 Admin Posted 27 July , 2021 I'm sure that @ss002d6252 and @sadbrewer understand. These things happen from time to time. Glad it's all sorted!
