ColdKiwi Posted 15 July , 2021 Posted 15 July , 2021 Greetings all. I came across a chassepot bayonet the other day that has strange regimental markings. They look German, but the letters have been substituted with numbers (see pic). It looks like there is an upside down 7 substituted for an L, and ‘11’ possibly substituted for ‘II’. Has anyone else seen anything similar before? Thanks
AndyBsk Posted 15 July , 2021 Posted 15 July , 2021 (edited) Strange unit, could be done only by field unit, Landwehr would be real but i dont known what is roman II or 11? II.4.228 looks like same size and same fonts? From size here its not stamped under manual directions. Is there any rework on bayonet done? Edited 15 July , 2021 by AndyBsk

I’ve compared this bayonet to two other chassepots I have. It looks like the muzzle ring on this bayonet has been modified. (See comparison pic) The ring diameter is 18mm. Also, here is a photo of a landwehr marked chassepot bayonet I have. The difference being that this has the proper lettering rather than substituted numbers (the upside down 7 and the 11 instead of II). Grateful for any further thoughts you may have on this. Thanks again
AndyBsk Posted 15 July , 2021 Posted 15 July , 2021 (edited) Yes probably done for Gew.88? with 18mm MRD, some had changed the locking nut, as the locking lenght of Gew88 is longer as by Chassepot, evidently the second correct marked bayonet was captured in French German war and used by Landwehr units probably 117 Landwehr Infanterie Regiment( 3.Hessian), II. Battalion, Company nr.5 and weapon nr.166, it was raised 1872 and used that designation to 1889 as changed later the name to Landwehr Battalion Ehrbach. LIR 117 was not mobilised in 1914 from wiki source. Edited 15 July , 2021 by AndyBsk
