I am hoping to organise a walking holiday on the Somme early next year. The intention is to follow the British frontline as it existed on 1.7.16. Can anyone tell me if this route is open to walking or am I likely to experience some difficulties along the way.

Thankyou for reading.

You might find Walking The Somme of use in planning your visit, as it covers all of the 1st July sectors.

You can use tracks to cover most of the front, but I wouldn't expect to walk it in one day - and I would seriously advise you do a recce if you are leading other people as part of this visit.

The Blue series French IGN maps will be invaluable to help plan your walks, as they cover all the tracks and paths. 99% have public access unless you see a sign at the start which says 'Voie Privee' (private way).

Hope that helps - enjoy your walks!

Bill, I would suggest that you also get hold of a copy of Barry Cuttells book, One Day on the Somme.

To get a copy us the link below to Bookfinder, they have a few copies available on the secondhand market.
