Hello everyone,

My name is Bram and I'm a new member of this forum. I started collecting ww1 militaria a couple weeks ago. Here are some pictures of my collection so far. It's not much but I'm definitely proud of it.

Greetings from Belgium

Bram,

Yes, you are very much welcomed to the forum!

There seems to be a growing number of Belgians on the forum lately, which brings sometimes a slightly different emphasis on objects shown and questions asked--it is all to the good.

Your collection may be small now, but I do like the good quality of your pieces.

The German bayonet is interesting, stamped to H. Mundlos of Magdeburg and Gebruder Hartkopf of Solingen; I believe that one of these firms produced the parts and the other company assembled them into the finished product. Unfortunately, I do not know which firm did which, but the experts here know!!

Regards,

JMB

I believe Hartkopf was the manufacturer and Mundlos the retailer.

What's this, please?

It's indeed a german m1917 egg handgrenade. And for those who wonder, yes, it's completely empty.

Your collection of a couple of weeks far exceeds my small collection (almost all contained in a small tin) that has taken since my childhood to accumulate. Do you live within reasonable distance of the battlefields to 'befriend' local landowners? I had a conservation with a farmer near Poperinge who took me to a shed and gave me a couple of items retrieved from his land. These were of no significant value and certainly not of museum quality but very poignant to me and treasured by me as my grandfather fought and was injured not too far away. Lovely to see your fledgling collection and please post again with your latest acquisitions, if you maintain the quality of selection shown in your first items I suspect you will finish with a very fine selection of artefacts .

Incidentally my father remembers his dad having a couple of souvenirs from the war including a German belt buckle of the type you show, sadly all my grandads possessions went in the dustbin in 1943 upon his death

It's about a 1,5 hour drive to the battlefields. I have been there a couple of times before but haven't really talked to any of the land owners yet. I might go back this summer with my metal detector and ask permission to do some metaldetecting.

Bayonet is a german S98/05 nA, for confirmation we should see the spine near crossguard marking W16 as sample under crown?, i assume Solingen produced the blade forging and Mundlos finished the piece completely . The condition of the piece is well preserved since 100 years. Blade and some metall parts should be light oiled and avoid from finger prints, as this could brings rust areas.

The spike of the blade is stamped w17 with a crown. The blade is indeed oiled and I never touch the blade itself. Thanks for the info!

Another collection update. I'm quite happy with how the collection is coming along. The french lebel is a relic found near the Belgium-France border and isn't functional anymore. The saber next to it is much older than ww1 but this one is a family piece. When my great grandparents had both passed away, this saber went to a private collector. But I still remembered this hanging on their wall from when I was still a kid. Now, more then 9 years later, I decided to find this collector. And I succeeded, the saber is now one of the favorite pieces in my collection. Not because it's a rare or expensive piece (because it really isn't) but because it has so many memories.

Bram,

Thanks for the update!

My grandfather was a bomber, so I especially like the Mills bomb.

Was that a metal detector find by yourself?

JMB

Sadly I didn't find it myself. It was recovered during an excavation near Ypres.

Greetings Bram
