Johnston   172886 awarded posthumously according to grandson, KIA 12.4.18

If Johnston was KIA on 12th April then his MM was not for an action on that date. MMs were not awarded to those killed in the action for which they were awarded. A soldier had to be alive (inc. wounded) when the recommendation for a MM award was made.

The 9th Bn. MMs in that gazette must have been for the same action in late March, as the schedule numbers are in the same number range:

Stewart             172873

MacDowell        172874

McConachie      172875

Telfer                172876

Dobbin             172877 served F&F 23.11.16, wounded 31.3.18, bar to MM August 18

Scott                 172878

Bird                  172879 served F&F 13.7.16

Telford              172880 (Bar - 1st MM 12-12-1917)

Kyles                 172881

MacCorquodale 172883

Sherratt            172884

Duffy                172885

Johnston           172886 awarded posthumously according to grandson, KIA 12.4.18

Dagg                172887

MacKenzie        172888

Young               172889

Watson             172890 (Bar - 1st MM 18-10-1917)

Ramsay             172891

McBrearty         172892 if PoW 22.3.18 - MMs must be for no later than 22nd - 21st?

Brown              172894

White               172895

Fairley             172898 severely wounded 30.3.18, died of wounds 5.4.18

Roy                 172899

Garry               172900

873-900 inclusive implies that at least 28 MMs were awarded to the 9th Bn. in this gazette for around 21st March 1918!

Thanks Neill. I found and added a few more there. Here is Thomas Garry's MM Index Card image from TNA (WO-372-23-109575).

All these MMs have the same RP no. (68/121/554) which shows that they were recommended together.

It takes time to pinpoint them all. There are some to 2nd Bn. in the same LG.

Thanks ivor  for the fantastic information

I am currently  in correspondence with local historical group regarding this man to get him a headstone.in his local cemetery.

I guess only he knew what he was awarded the MM for.

Regards

Steven

James Robert Jamieson's MM was at Arras (9-11 Apr 17), then a Bar to MM at Cambrai (20-24 Nov 17, according to Ewing, in his regtl history, he distinguished himself in reorganising leaderless troops). An NZ newspaper simply says his DCM was won 'a little time ago' (published 13 Jul 18), before it appeared in the Gazette (3 Sep 18).

David Walker's MM was Arras (Apr 17) and DCM was 25 Mar 18, again by reference to Ewing, but the Royal High, Edinburgh lists it as May 18, Gazette (3 Sep 18).

John Fraser's DCM was for 1 Aug 18 (The Fifteenth (Scottish) Division by Stewart and Buchan), LG (30 Oct 18).

I have William Telford MM for gallantry 20/21 Sep 17 (51st Div War Diary)

Do we mean William Telfer (p.8329 LG 16.7.18)? Ewing singles him out for 28 Mar 18

I have a James Watson MM for service between 2.7 and 7.8.17, date of award 21.8.17 (51st Div War Diary)

On p.8330 I have a John White but no Watson?

Telford & Watson's second MMs are in the MM & Bar section at the start of the LG (there are Telfer & White MMs too):

We still have another 4 MMs to the 9th Bn. to find in that LG (882,893, 896, 897):

I guess that is the list? Curiously I have no previous reference for JS Andrews (330203 not 330230 as in LG).

Great work Neill. Who needs jigsaws when we have LGs? :)

For one battalion to get 28 MMs in one action/period! They must have really held the line during the German Spring Offensive!

The war diary for the end of March 1918 records heavy casualties for the month (inc. officers) TNA ref. WO-95-1954-1.

They had almost daily moves/withdrawals from 21st March on. The MMs would fit into this period. They had a draft of 528 on 6th April.
