I am unlikely to be able to get to  the 8 Devons  war  diary at Kew for some months. Soldiers Died says this man was KIA, while the medal rolls and CWGC say that he was accidentally killed. Some sources give the 27th April rather than the 28th.

if anyone has a copy of the war diary, or is able to shed any light on his death by any other means, I would be most grateful.

His Soldiers' Effects Record, which I have found to be very reliable, states that he was accidently killed (on 28th April 1918).

Whilst still pretty good, I find SDGW to be the least reliable source.

Russ

Edit: His Pension Ledger Card (c/o WFA) has the same information as above.

Thanks Russ, I had found those, I would just like to find some detail to confirm the facts. i agree SD has virtually only 4 options for cause of death.

His Pension card appears to confirm 28th and accidently killed. [Courtesy Fold3]

Thanks again to George and Russ, but I really want to find out about the accident, assuming, as I am inclined to agree, that that is a correct cause of death. I have managed to tweak my order for the National Archives to include the war diary, so will hopefully be able to find out, provided that I am able to confirm that I am being allocated a table with a camera stand.Seeingly it is too soon to get that confirmed, but I will be checking nearer the date. I will only have one visit before the winter, so have had to do a bit of juggling to fit it in. I started with a list significantly exceeding the 12 core orders, and ahve had to be pretty brutal to find space for this one.

Keith,

I have a copy of the Regt History but cannot access it until Thursday (moving house).

Thanks Colin,

Whenever you have time to check. Moving house can be a pretty big job, but if there is a mention that would be great.

Thanks

Keith,

Sorry, nothing of any assistance; the period Apr to Jun 18 is glossed over in the Regt History.

I hope the war diary comes up trumps.
