That gives me a lot more of a direction he took, because of the medals I could only definitely pinpoint Belgium. 
I did look up McPike, Storrie, and Patchett but couldn’t find a service record.

hence the other chap being a ‘similar path’ but clearly not ( face in palm, now pouring a glass of wine)

You were not wrong. Alexander Gray overlapped considerably with John. They could well have known each other in the 1/4ths during 1916-17.

Gray died in the fighting in the Judean hills in November 1917. John would have been there at the time.

both my great grandads war journeys have been a hard task master. Take for granted what information can be received from service records. Piecing together info from medals cards, and other documents still leaves room for too much guess work. 
 

can’t thank you all again for everybody’s help, enjoy a lovely bank holiday weekend
