Labeline Posted 25 May , 2021 Share Posted 25 May , 2021 (edited) I am doing some research into a friend's Great Grandfather. Alfred George Page served with the 9th Balloon Company from 1916 and was awarded a Meritorious Service Medal for operations in Italy. His award was listed in the Supplement to the London Gazette dated 2nd June 1919 Page 7038. Is there any way of finding out what it was awarded for? scottmarchand Posted 26 May , 2021 Share Posted 26 May , 2021 Hi, Generally speaking - no - these postwar awards and especially for things like MSM's were often simply omnibus awards in recognition of outstanding service versus and specific 'action' that would be documented anywhere. I have a reference on MSM's at home I can look at - but I have a few of these in my collection and they are pretty generic in nature of additional details. Labeline Posted 27 May , 2021 Author Share Posted 27 May , 2021 Thank you for your response. I thought that may be the case as I hadn't come across anything anywhere.
Ivor Anderson Posted 12 July , 2021 Share Posted 12 July , 2021 While such a late MSM award would have been for meritorious service over a period of time, it may have been mentioned in the unit war diary in late 1918: https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C4088071 There is a service record for him on Find My Past: https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C10542306
Labeline Posted 12 July , 2021 Author Share Posted 12 July , 2021 Thanks. I had seen his service record and sent it to his relative. The National Archives maybe an option for him when they re open.
