I am doing some research into a friend's Great Grandfather. Alfred George Page served with the 9th Balloon Company from 1916 and was awarded a Meritorious Service Medal for operations in Italy. His award was listed in the Supplement to the London Gazette dated 2nd June 1919 Page 7038. Is there any way of finding out what it was awarded for?

Hi,

Generally speaking  - no - these postwar awards and especially for things like MSM's were often simply  omnibus awards in recognition of outstanding service versus and specific 'action' that would be documented anywhere. I have a reference on MSM's at home I can look at  - but I have a few of these in my collection and they are pretty generic in nature of additional details.

Thanks. I had seen his service record and sent it to his relative. The National Archives maybe an option for him when they re open.
