The article states "R. THOMPSON, 1653, RAMC" - won't help them with a search if his name was actually Percy

I think that is why they were going awry! A bit of dodgy engraving and a P becomes an R

Hope it wasn't/isn't engraved - should be embossed!

If the name was embossed, the letters would be raised above the surface of the rim, and presumably in danger of wearing away. I think the letters were punched or otherwise impressed into the rim of the medal. If this thread were transferred to the MEDAL part of the Forum I'm sure someone would come up with the correct terminology.

You are absolutely right about 'embossing' = my error in terminology :-( - I had intended, and agree with you about being sort, of 'punched' into the rim i.e. impressed.

Terminology aside - I hope the medals are genuine and get to someone who genuinely wants and values them.

Does anyone know if this chaps original number, 1653, would have been issued by the 3rd Northumbrian Field Ambulance when he joined or did RAMC TF issue numbers centrally? My own great grand father was renumbered in 1917 as per all RAMC TF, and I am trying to establish if his original number would have been issued by RAMC TF or the individual units.
