A family member has recently given me the record of service book 439 of the above officer. Could anyone provide me with information around the award of his MC.  The gazzeted date looks like 1st Jan 1919.

It’s listed here in the Edinburgh gazette….https://www.thegazette.co.uk/Edinburgh/issue/13379/page/90

has him as 262nd brigade RFA.

can’t see a citation so presume a New Years honour type award.

Cheers I think he was possibly from Essex .   I don't know much about the criteria for the award of the Military Cross but I thought it was purely an award for gallantry.  It would be good to know a little more about him

From what I can see it was for distinguished service in connection with military operations in Egypt.

Good luck with your search, I’m sure someone will be along shortly to elaborate.

Hi Kevin, If you have his 'Record of Service Book' then you probably have his key military dates and facts.

He appears to have been born in India on 31 December 1891.

He was a 'gentleman cadet' (aged 19) at Woolwich on the 1911 census.

He made 2nd Lieut. on 19th July 1912: https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/issue/28634/page/5920

Lieut. 9th June 1915: https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/issue/29250/supplement/7650

Captain 8th August 1916: https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/issue/29727/page/8501

Acting Major in charge of a Battery in Jan. 1919: https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/issue/31326/supplement/5642

He retired as a Major in 1938: https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/issue/34554/page/6010

His Medal Index Card states that he first entered a theatre of war on 29 April 1918 with the rank of Captain (home service prior to this).

I am intrigued by the 'IRELAND 0137/9384' stamp on his MC card.

He died at Braintree in Essex on 1 March 1959 aged 67 - will probate off Ancestry:

Would anyone have a photo of this man. If the officer in this photo on the IWM website, on the left, is a Captain then it will be Caudle. Cant find a comparison on ancestry or any other locations. The centre is a Major John Frederick Barrington. I hope someone could also tell me is the officer a 2/Lt or Lt? Name is most likely Abinett or Ross. The photo is 1920-1921.
