ServiceRumDiluted Posted 22 April , 2021 Share Posted 22 April , 2021 British gas shells had a filling hole in the side, blocked with a wooden dowel. Some German gas shells (77mm) had a green bottle which was inverted, but these had a Green stopper. I'm away from my sources at the moment but later I'll post some images which might be of interest. If you google 'notes on German shells' you should find a 500 odd page pdf which details amongst other things, German gas shells.

ServiceRumDiluted Posted 22 April , 2021 Share Posted 22 April , 2021 Assuming you have tracked down notes on German shells I won't put images up from that. These are from RL Handbook of ammunition May 1918
ServiceRumDiluted Posted 22 April , 2021 Share Posted 22 April , 2021 Two bottles, one for scale. One was used to deliver noxious liquid, the other used in WW1 German gas shells. These bottles are pretty hard to find, especially with stopper. Rumour has it that a cache of about 300 were found in a pit near Ypres where some luckless POWs had had the job of dismantling gas shells. I don't know the truth but this is the only intact one I have ever seen. I picked it up a few years ago in an antiques centre, described as 'Bottle from WW1 found on battlefield £8' I snapped it up.
