Kath Posted 21 April , 2021 Share Posted 21 April , 2021 I have Ancestry, but can't find the diary for the 7th. Royal Berkshire. Can anyone help, please?
Gunner 87 Posted 21 April , 2021 Share Posted 21 April , 2021 (edited) Hi Kath. Would it be this? https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C4558025 It doesn't appear to have been digitised yet which is maybe why it's not an Ancestry. Kath Posted 21 April , 2021 Author Share Posted 21 April , 2021 (edited) Thanks, Gunner. Yes, I think that must be the area. I'm tracking some soldiers who were PoWS. I've found them in ICRC. But they were captured in 1917, and the link says 1918? From the Reading Mercury - Reading, Berkshire 28 July 1917 - PREVLY REPTD MISSING , NOW REPTD. POWs IN BULGARIAN HANDS Private A.S Adams, 23494, (Bristol). Private A Bailey, 27367 (Stimfield). Private G. C. Brill, 25820 (Reading). Private A. J. Coleman, 25572 (Bristol). Private G. W. Flook, 25568 (Bristol). Private A E. Hawthorne. 24834 (Reading). Private F. C. Heriman, 24805 (Clifton). Private H. Hlbbs, 25554 , (Bristol). Private F. Smallbone 14040 (Homerton, E.) Private H.W.Yandell 25553 (Southville). Edited 21 April , 2021 by Kath

clk Posted 21 April , 2021 Share Posted 21 April , 2021 (edited) Hi Kath, If you can make do with just transcripts of the main body of the diary, and only want a short period of time they are available using a specific date search from here. If you click on the initial text that you see, it will open up and give you a fuller entry if there is more. Another slight pain is that you can't download what you see, so it's a 'copy and paste' job I'm afraid. Kath Posted 21 April , 2021 Author Share Posted 21 April , 2021 THANK YOU, jAY AND CHRIS. I looked at that site. but wasn't clever enough to find the Diaries. Thanks for helping. Kath.
Kath Posted 21 April , 2021 Author Share Posted 21 April , 2021 The first notice of the capture appears on the 19 May 1917 in the South Bristol Free Press and Bedminster News: News has been received that two brothers, Privates Bert and Fred Yandell, are missing. They are the sons of Mr. Edward Yandell, of Frayne Road, Ashton Gate. Both were Privates in the 7th. Royal Berkshires. Bert is Herbert William Yandell Pte.23335 Fred is Frederick Charles Yandell Pte.30648 - BUT I've not fond him in ICRC. I am presuming this entry in the War Diary refers to the capture: 1917-05-09 Regiment 7th Royal Berkshire Location Greece, VLADAJA OR killed 14 missing 9, wounded 131. clk Posted 21 April , 2021 Share Posted 21 April , 2021 Hi Kath, 14040 Smallbone (7th Bn) Image sourced from Findmypast 25568 Flook (transcribed as Hook) Image sourced from Findmypast I guess though that whilst the men in the Reading Mercury (- Reading, Berkshire 28 July 1917) appeared on a list confirming that they were being held as PoWs, it doesn't necessarily flow that they were all taken PoW at the same time. clk Posted 21 April , 2021 Share Posted 21 April , 2021 Hi Kath, 29 minutes ago, Kath said: Where does the report on Smallbone come from, please? It comes from his service file which is here on Findmypast (under Smallbones). I guess that it should also be on Ancestry, but I'm finding it a bit difficult to find at the moment.
