Memento of the Llandovery Castle

Found in a book: I can't connect H.M. Peacock with the Llandovery Castle, but what about E.M.D.? Or is that E.G.W.?

The book was published in 1914, the year the ship was built, but as you can see the gift was made in July 1918, not long after she was torpedoed.

The bookmark / top strip of company stationery may have nothing to do with the war, but it's hard (for me, anyway) not to try to build a story round it.

To me it looks like E.M.W. though I'm not sure that really helps at all.

Thanks! The M is somewhat different from the M in H.M. which is what made me wonder.

Don’t forget that there was a replacement ‘Llandovery Castle’ built in 1925 and she too became a hospital ship in WW2. Based on the evidence of the inscription in Masefield’s book of poetry, your memento probably relates to this later built ship.

PS The original  ‘Llandovery Castle’ was ‘RMS’ (up until she became a hospital ship), but the replacement ship didn’t have a Royal Mail contract and so was simply prefixed with ‘S.S.’

Ah, I'd forgotten about the WW2 ship, not to mention the RMS. That would make sense. Wish I knew how the book got to the collection at work, though!
