Polar Bear Posted 15 April , 2021 Share Posted 15 April , 2021 I assume you mean Walter Sterry, Private 3/4699 Suffolk Regiment? If so he qualified for the '14 Star and entered France on the 2nd September 1914. That must be as a group of reinforcements for the 2nd (Regular) battalion for they were the only one of the Suffolk battalions in France at the time (They had entered on the 17th August). No other Suffolk battalion will reach France until November. Hope that is a start. P
david murdoch Posted 15 April , 2021 Share Posted 15 April , 2021 There is a register of soldiers effects for him with a date of death of 23/3/1918 - stating Killed in Action but then later was found to be a POW. This sheet also confirms he was still with 2nd Battalion Suffolks.
Matlock1418 Posted 15 April , 2021 Share Posted 15 April , 2021 (edited) The ICRC/CICR have a couple of PoW records for Walter STERRY, 4699 See: https://grandeguerre.icrc.org/en/File/Details/1497019/3/2 [enter details and scroll as necessary to find pages] Many details may be of interest, such as his birth 29.4.1878 [Place may be spelt incorrectly], unwounded capture at Wanecourt, 28.3.18, and including his repatriation, 30 Nov. 1918 Western Front Association / Fold3 have a number of pension claim record cards 4699, Walter STERRY's mother, Mrs Mary Ann STERRY, Botesdale, Diss, Sugffolk seems to have made a dependant's claim for him [and seemingly for another son Pte Robert STERRY, 18591, 2nd Bn, Bedfordshire Regt., KiA 11.4.17]. As on one card Walter's names and details are crossed out it seems her claim for him seems likely to not have been successful under the circumstances of his survival. Walter STERRY also seems to have made a disability pension claim on transfer to the Z Army Reserve - further details are not shown. :-) M Edited 15 April , 2021 by Matlock1418
