mancpal Posted 14 April , 2021 Share Posted 14 April , 2021 Could somebody please post an image of the Scots Guards tartan and if possible where I can buy a piece approximately 6"x4". Its for a small mounting project I have in mind. Bearing in mind the small visible area I have in mind (as above), would I need to acquire a larger sample in order to 'centralise' the background for the medal I hope to display in front of it? Evidently I am not an expert in uniforms or tartans so your advice would as usual be welcome. Ta Simon
squirrel Posted 14 April , 2021 Share Posted 14 April , 2021 Scots Guards tartan would be Royal Stewart IIRC. Googling tartan suppliers you should be able to find what you are after.
Ron Abbott Posted 14 April , 2021 Share Posted 14 April , 2021 (edited) Pipers of the Scots Guards wear kilts and plaids in the Royal Stewart tartan. Warrant Officers and commissioned officers also wear the same tartan behind their cap star when wearing a beret and on the right hand side of their service cap. However the pipers of the Scots Guards also have Government tartan pipe bag covers and I think the rear side of their bagpipe ribbons may also be Government tartan although the front side is Royal Stewart. FROGSMILE Posted 14 April , 2021 Share Posted 14 April , 2021 Here are some views of Royal Stewart as worn by Scots Guards pipers.

In the first photo, the bagpipe cover is not an official one. It should be government tartan. Only the Pipe-Major has a non tartan one (blue velvet with silver fringe). I'm not sure what that one represents despite what appears to be the army badge embroidered on the rear of it. Possibly one of the pipe bands of the Scots Guards Association or a former piper of the Scots Guards who has put a uniform together for playing in civvie street ? (merely a guess). My pure guess would be the Army School of Piping Ron. In the last decade it’s become much more ‘corporate’ under direct pressure from the MOD to operate more as a business (this is increasingly common) with a view to maximising receipts from other countries (especially but not exclusively Commonwealth ones) who are proponents of pipers in their own armed (and police) forces, by way of encouraging paying students . The pipes bag cover might well be a reflection of that. Edited 14 April , 2021 by FROGSMILE
