John Gordon Gallipoli Campaign

I wonder if someone can point me in the right direction regarding my great uncle John Gordon. Such a common name and I'm struggling to find any relevant information on him amidst all the many other John Gordons. No middle name that I'm aware of. All we know is he fought in Gallipoli. Born in Selkirk in 14-05-86 with parents James & Euphemia of Dingleton, Melrose. By the time War started he was married and living in Newstead with a son James (who fought with distinction in WW2 achieving the rank of Major with an MBE). John Gordon died in 1976 so he survived. Advice on the best site to search for Gallipoli veterans would be appreciated. Thank you.

Euphemia Drummond?  The tree on ancestry is it yours?  There is a John Gordon who died from same area so possibly a relative?  I think your John Had several siblings Adam Served in Queens Own Cameron Highlanders and was KIA and Alex in Royal Garrison Regt - I am sure someone with greater knowledge will help soon - maybe kings own Scottish Borderers or royal scots?

You have posted info elsewhere so I guess the family tree must be yours

Thank you for taking the time to reply. I will investigate. My family and I dip in and out of searches as we have so many great uncles to search for and so little time to do this. We can sometimes neglect past work we have done. Very good of you to mention.

My father spotted your post and is very interested to get in touch. John Gordon is my father's grandfather. He has lots of information and knowledge to share. I will ask him to register. Best wishes.

Hello Terry,

John Gordon did his training at Stobs Military Camp at Hawick (hundreds of thousands of young men used the facilities at Stobs Camp in the Scottish Borders to train for war). He was part of the 1/4th KOSB part of the 52nd Lowland division. He was part of a team that led horses up to the front line with large guns. I was very close to my Grandfather and although he did not speak much about the war it was a rough conflict. After the war, John Gordon, who was married to Agnes Christie, had two sons. Jim, born 1916 and Jack, born 1920 (my father). Jim has a daughter, Barbara in Italy and I have a brother, Drummond living in Galashiels.

I have photographs and military information on Adam, George and James (George and James were both pipers in WW1) .

Best wishes

David

Hello David

Thank you for your reply. We are 2nd cousins then if I have that right. My grandmother was John's sister Mary. I actually met your Grandfather around 1975 I think it would be when I made a visit to Fortune Row. Jim and his wife were there at the time also, though that may have been a separate visit I made in '77. My 2 sisters and I have been researching the lives of the Gordon boys during WW1 on and off for some time. In fact one of my nieces visited George's grave in Belgium a few years ago. We are very keen to exchange information and photographs when you are able to do so. I'm not sure if it is against house rules to publish email addresses here and apologies if I have broken any house regulations but I am on  (email address removed) as a starting point - just whenever you can manage.

Best wishes indeed

Terry

Oh, thank you for that advice Michelle. Very kind of you. I'm not very up to speed with technology so how would I send a private message please? Thanks, Terry
