Remembered Today:

Dr. Charles Winchester Du Bouchet (1868-1947)

Croix de Guerre

Recommended Posts

Hello All,  I need your assistance.  I am researching a physician that worked at the American Ambulance Hospital of Paris whose name was Dr. Charles Winchester DuBouchet.  I have found a large amount of information concerning the doctor but the one thing I have failed to locate is where he attended medical school.  He may have been born in Switzerland or possibly in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania USA but spent the majority of his life and career in France.  Before the war he made newspaper articles that referenced his arrest by Czarist police forces in Odessa, Russia where he was working as a physician.  It seems he had attracted the ire of the government for giving safe harbor to a number of jewish people during the program of 1908.  He was released under the provisions that he would never return to Russia again.

The doctor was very active during the war and was made a Chevalier of Honor in 1931.  He had to flee France during WW2 and died in 1947 in he US.  Try as I may, I cannot locate any records of where he went to med school or an obituary.

If any of you could help guide me to a new source of biographical information, I would appreciate it.

I see from his passport applications that he was born in Paris in 1868 and that he lived in Russia (his wife Mary Jane is listed as being Russian) from 1898 to 1908 when he moved back to France via a trip to the family home in Philadelphia US. FMP link and FMP link 2  It is unclear whether he stayed in France from 68 to 98 or moved back to the US. I too have been unable to locate a medical registration or an obituary for him. Hopefully someone else may have better luck.

I did however find an obituary for his son Charles Vivian Du Bouchet https://net.lib.byu.edu/estu/wwi/memoir/AFShist/Mem3.htm

1.  Born Paris, France, 07 December 1868.

2. In the Official Bulletin of the Ministry of Justice , in 1890 (link given above by Fdanes), we can read "medical student ... living at 3, place Saint-François-Xavier [Paris]".
He must therefore have been a medical student in Paris, but I could not find more details.

3.  In his US passport application of 28 May 1891, (from ancestry), he mentions completing his medical studies in France and and further states that he intends to return to the US when he has finished his studies:
