Noor Posted 8 April , 2021 Share Posted 8 April , 2021 (edited) Hi all, I am trying to research a 13092 CPL Thomas Durkin but unfortunately I am stuck at the moment. In respect of his service number, +/- 10 digit recruits are mainly from Ireland. Also looks like it is a common enough family name in Ireland, so I assume he was a local lad. He served in the 2nd Battalion, landed in France 3-May-1915. Unfortunately hospitalised 28-May-1915 due to Hernia. Then he was transferred into the Royal Irish Fusiliers 1st Garrison Battalion and was shipped to India from Dublin. His new service number was G/252. I can see that there was a Thomas Durkin in the Guinness factory, who served with the Royal Irish Fusiliers but I am pretty sure now that he is not the same man. If you have any information about him (DOB year, where he was from, etc) then please let me know. Many thanks! It was extremely common for men with medical conditions to be transferred to a Garrison Battalion, post Op from a Hernia being a typical example in case. corisande Posted 8 April , 2021 Share Posted 8 April , 2021 I did look at this earlier today, and was not able to reach a conclusion that would have helped Noor with his medals. The most likely man was in 1911 census and born Kildare. You can get his age from the census and his birth cert is therefore gettable The problem is that it dos not tie into the man's RDF details (mainly because we do not have any details). There appears to be no service ot pension records for him, and nothing in newspapers
Noor Posted 8 April , 2021 Author Share Posted 8 April , 2021 Thanks for checking. I was looking through all of my sources and nothing. I can see many of the men who enlisted, were Irish.
