The 1/6th Battalion, The Royal Warwickshire Regiment Serial Number Query

Hello everyone,

I reall hope that you are well. I was hoping to get some help in regards to serial numbers used by The 1/6th Battalion, The Royal Warwickshire Regiment just before territorial army renumbering came into play in March 1917,

I have identified almost three stages of serial numbers, at the outbreak of war soldiers were allocated a four didget serial number for example Corporal W.S. Morgan (3573)who was killed in action on 06/06/1916 probably joined after September 1914.

Around July and August 1916, a five didget number seems to have been common place with Private Henry Nichols (20731) joining around the end of July 1916. I was wondering if anyone had any information as regards to any more serial numbers with confirmed dates of entry into France?

Due to the losses on Saturday 1st July 1916, a lot of men were posted as missing and further recieved a territorial army number in the 242*** range in March 1917 which complicates matters a little further.

I was wondering if anyone could help me identify a man with a 207** number from The 1/6th Battalion, The Royal Warwickshire Regiment and his date of entry into France.

Best Wishes,

5 digit numbers were not from the Territorial range, they were from the regular/service battalion sequence. Men with these numbers may have been posted to the battalion as reinforcements and retained numbers but they were not enlisted on Territorial terms of service.

What information do you have ?

A 207*** number was originally allocated to the 5th Bn.

Hello Craig,

This is really interesting, it was my understanding that quite a few men posted to The 1/6th Battalion, The Royal Warwickshire Regiment had a number beginning in 207**.

My Great Grandfather Henry Nichols joined the battalion in late July 1916 and had the serial number 20731 before territorial army renumbering, I believe he had been assigned to the battalion from The 1/7th Battalion, The Royal Warwickshire Regiment.

Another man with a similar serial number is Private L. Knight (20822) who was killed in action on 18/08/1916, Private G.L. Hasler (20720) who was killed in action on 24/08/1916, Private G.H Hancox (20721) who died of his wounds on 27/08/1916 and Private G. Gascoigne (20717) died of his wounds on 15/10/1916. The numbers seem to have a range of five digit numbers in the 20*** range increasing from August 1916 until territorial army renumbering in March 1916.

I have been trying to figure out a date for when some soldiers with the 207** serial number arrived in France for my own research but the only bit of information I have comes from my Great Grandfather who was stated to have served eight full months in France before being killed on 11/03/1917.

The record which I have open is quite handy as it hints at men who were listed as missing on 01/07/1916 as they received a new number when territorial army renumbering took place.

I really hope you may be able to help.

Best Wishes,
