charles isles Posted 8 April , 2021 Share Posted 8 April , 2021 I am trying to trace the military medal awarded to my grandfather in 1919. He was a Sergeant in the Machine Gun Corps,, reg no 98310. his name , Charles Isles. London gazette 11Feb 1919 refers. Any help most appreciated
Pat Atkins Posted 8 April , 2021 Share Posted 8 April , 2021 (edited) He has some surviving papers on Find My Past (mostly medical records) which show his second and final wounding in action occurred on 20/10/1918 - this wound might perhaps be linked to the action for which he was awarded the MM, in which case a look at the relevant War Diary could prove useful. The gap in time from a recommendation in October 1918 to a LG mention in February 1919 seems plausible. If you don't have access to FMP I can summarise (uncertain as to the legality of doing more). Cheers, Pat Edit: just checked his medal rolls entries, but no mention of a particular MGC unit alas. Edit again: BUT, his MM card says 17th Bn MGC. Phew! The War Diary is probably available free at the National Archives, or via Ancestry. Edited 8 April , 2021 by Pat Atkins
charles isles Posted 8 April , 2021 Author Share Posted 8 April , 2021 thank you so much Pat.. He was with 17bn machine gun corps. moved there from the Black Watch Royal Highlanders. He was not impressed when I joined the Military Police for a full career. I dont have access to FMP, is it a subscription based site.
Pat Atkins Posted 8 April , 2021 Share Posted 8 April , 2021 Aha, OK - I'm about to go to work, but I'll message you later with info (basically, he went to France in 1915 with 6/BW and was wounded, then had appendicitis, transferred to MGC in 1917 and back to France, wounded again 20/10/1918). Have had a look at the 17 MGC War Diary and they note individual Other Ranks awarded the MM by name, but when there were a few together they don't, annotingly; couldn't see Charles Isles but these two entries below might well include him. The other possibility was a post-Armistice award for general good service during the war, but the WD specifically mentions by name the two sergeants who got these MMs, so I think Charles probably got his for an act of gallantry in action. Any help most appreciated Welcome to the forum I presume the medal isn't within the extended family anywhere? Have you set up alerts on eBay / Auction sites in case it comes up for sale? I would suggest posting in the British Medal Forum if you haven't already done so https://britishmedalforum.com/index.php Good luck with the search. charles isles Posted 8 April , 2021 Author Share Posted 8 April , 2021 Thank you Pat, great help.. I dont see his name on the action report, where did you see that he was a ploughman. Would the action which led to the MM be listed anywhere. I believe that many of the records for the machine gun corps were destroyed in a fire Charles

Ivor Anderson Posted 8 April , 2021 Share Posted 8 April , 2021 (edited) Howard Williamson states that the 11-02-1919 LG was for the Battle of Amiens 8th August - 6th September 1918. SEVEN men from the 17th Bn. MGC got MMs in that LG. Their schedule nos. are consecutive indicating that they were awarded for the same action: Sgt. Thomas Clamp 36446 - MM schedule no. 205516. Pte. James Joseph Hurst 143334 - MM schedule no. 205517 Sgt. Charles Isles 98310- MM schedule no. 205518. Pte. Francis Joseph McCarthy 129894 - MM schedule no. 205519. L/Cpl. Caryll Ivor Nicholls 124518 - MM schedule no. 205520. L/Cpl. Moses Solomons 114504 - MM schedule no. 205521. Pte. Ernest Timms 115298 - MM schedule no. 205522. Check the War Diary for August & early September 1918 for a major action. It may be their 7 mentioned in the WD on 22nd September. Pat Atkins Posted 8 April , 2021 Share Posted 8 April , 2021 Wonderful, IA has solved it I think! The WD gives no indication of what specific action MM awards were for, but this should allow a pretty good idea.
charles isles Posted 9 April , 2021 Author Share Posted 9 April , 2021 fantastic news for me,, thank you so much gentlemen. I am fairly new to the system, how can I access the WD for 22 Sep
Pat Atkins Posted 9 April , 2021 Share Posted 9 April , 2021 It's available to download free from the National Archives - click on this link or this one: https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/results/r?_col=200&_cr1=WO+95&_hb=tna&_q=17+machine+gun+corps (I'm always a bit wary of unspecified links!) to go to the correct page. You'll need to register with them, which only asks for an email address, costs nothing and is dead simple to do; then you can download material free of charge. If you have a problem, PM me and I'll share my copy via Dropbox (to send a private message via the Forum, click on my username in this thread and it should give you a "message" option).
