Gunner 87 Posted 7 April , 2021 Share Posted 7 April , 2021 Hi arantxa. Just for your interest the large tent like structure behind the group shot is likely a 'Bessonneau Hangar' initially used by the French but adopted by the RNAS and RFC during the war. Unfortunately being temporary it doesn't give any clues as to the location.

PhilB Posted 7 April , 2021 Share Posted 7 April , 2021 Aren’t they RNAS pilots?
hmsk212 Posted 8 April , 2021 Share Posted 8 April , 2021 See this thread on RNAS uniforms etc. :- RNAS uniforms. - Uniforms,Cap Badges and Insignia - Great War Forum I believe the badges that appear to be blacked out are the black and red cloth cap badges used by ratings as per the above thread. arantxa Posted 8 April , 2021 Author Share Posted 8 April , 2021 It looks the same doesn’t it i guess it was censorship
hmsk212 Posted 8 April , 2021 Share Posted 8 April , 2021 Hi I think you misunderstand me, it is not censorship, it just that these black cloth badges with red crown etc show up as plain black in photographs hence looking like they have been blacked out. PhilB Posted 8 April , 2021 Share Posted 8 April , 2021 Likewise the arm badges on the two men in photo 5 appear as black?
sdparker Posted 8 April , 2021 Share Posted 8 April , 2021 This photo is similar in content to several taken at Cranwell, and on display at the Aviation Heritage Museum-currently closed. I am not suggesting it was taken there, but it may have been taken to signal the end of the RNAS, as it was amalgamated with the RFC to become the RAF. Therefore the date would be 31/3/1918 or 1/4/1918. Since there are so many pilots in the photo, and men wearing khaki, I wonder if it is one of the squadrons posted to the Western Front. Someone may be able to recognise some of the pilots Regards Geoff

sdparker Posted 9 April , 2021 Share Posted 9 April , 2021 I think the officer seated 2nd left, with laced up leather boots, bears a resemblance to Captain L D Bawlf. There is a photo of 203 Sqdn lined up in front of their Sopwith Camels waiting to be inspected by the King, taken on 12/7/1918, at Izel le Hameau. Bawlf is standing on the left in this picture. Anyone else agree? Also the CO is presumably seated 12th from the right? Can you post an enlargement of him? Regards Geoff
