chaz Posted 3 April , 2021 Share Posted 3 April , 2021 Ive received my latest purchase, a pair and photograph of Walter Wheeler 46022 Durh L I / 71163 MGC. Browsing the usual sources, I reckon on him being from Leicester, Ancestry has his service papers as 4602 but crossed out and with 42676 and what looks like Manchester Oddfellows above. His MIC only shows 7602 and 71163 numbers. he was wounded and NOK address is Leicester as his address on enlistment. why the 42676? looks like the Oddfellows were like the Buffs but would he have travelled from Leicester to Manchester.? the Oddfellows contained a few notable members in the past. A browse on Google has reference to a roll of honour or book of rememberance in Salford, has anyone come across this book as it does say If you know the condition of this memorial, please help by adding details .? ss002d6252 Posted 3 April , 2021 Share Posted 3 April , 2021 The 42676 is explained here https://search.findmypast.co.uk/record?id=gbm%2fwo363-4%2f007318681%2f00703&parentid=gbm%2fwo363-4%2f7318681%2f16%2f699 It looks like his original number was 4602, then 42676 and then 71163. The 46022 looks like an error. Craig
chaz Posted 3 April , 2021 Author Share Posted 3 April , 2021 thanks Craig, Ive looked at his enlistment papers on A but some parts are hard to read. As mentioned above, they didnt think important enough to include the other number on his mic.

Hi I'm late to the chat and you may be know. Manchester unity seems to be the head lodge as it were with Lodges dotted about the country. I've got 2 Oddfellow medals with a naval trio from Vale of Mowbray District which I'm trying to find out about. Now known as Vale of York.
