AOK4 Posted 30 March , 2021 Share Posted 30 March , 2021 (edited) I would like to inform you of this publication: Mich schaudert dieses Krieges. Die graphischen Zyklen zum Ersten Weltkrieg by Petra Aescht and Bernd Ernsting. It's a massive 2 volume publication of 1,435 pages and 7,473 colour illustrations (+ a DVD with 9,394 illustrations). http://www.letter-stiftung.de/index.php/leser/items/neuerscheinung-mich-schaudert-dieses-krieges.html The work gives an (incomplete, but as complete as the authors were able to gather) overview of the graphics series that were published mainly in the German and Austro-Hungarian area about the First World War. 453 artists are listed with some biographical information. There are artists who made very realistic works, but also some who created caricatures (which were allowed to be published!) and some show very apocalyptic scenes. There are aplenty of very interesting series, not only showing scenes on the Western Front, but also the Eastern Front and even more exotic areas such as Italy, Macedonia and even Africa. Life and death at the front is shown, but also scenes from the war industry or from the life as a PoW in far away places like in Siberia. There are indexes at the back for units, places, artists etc. I can highly recommend the publication to whomever who is interested in war artists and war art. ilkley remembers Posted 30 March , 2021 Share Posted 30 March , 2021 (edited) This sounds wonderful and you have certainly whetted my appetite but, sadly, at 298 Euros it is somewhat beyond my price range. IR Perhaps you can get a library with an interest in WWI and art to acquire it? That way you could have a look at it as well.
