I am trying to get information on  2nd Lt Edward Howard Skinner 1st Devons  for some research I'm doing. I know he was educated at Queens College Taunton and have his signing up papers but little else to fill in his back story. I would be very grateful for any further information.

Always worth looking in the London Gazette for his commissioning date as a 2 Lt

The undermentioned to be Second Lieutenants (on probation). Dated 9th September, 1915: — ... Edward Howard Skinner, Devonshire Regiment"

Edit:

The undermentioned 2nd Lts. (on prob.) are confirmed in their rank: — INFANTRY. Devon. R. ... E. H. Skinner.

He was killed when the 1 Devons attacked Bovril and Mince trenches at Morval on 25 Sept 1916.

Edit:  Pension card at WFA/Fold3 shows his widow as being Hilda Cosnitt [sic] if you compare with his CWGC https://www.cwgc.org/find-records/find-war-dead/casualty-details/543623/EDWARD HOWARD SKINNER which also has his parents, Alfred & Emma

He married Hilda Cosnett(e) Goodman. Reg 1Q 1915. She was born 2/9/1884 Taunton. She died 8/1/63 in Taunton having never remarried. His medal card gives date of entry to France of 16/8/16.

As a 2 Lt.

The other annotation of Lt on the MIC is not yet confirmed.

In use Lt is a common short abbreviation of 2 Lt [along with Mr]

Most 2 Lt took 18 months to get to substantive Lt and he had only had his 9 Sept. 1915 2 Lt rank confirmed 28 Aug. 1916 and he died 20 Sep. 1916

Of course he could have been acting Lt - but not [yet?] found a LG to support that [though the LG could be behind the curve on occasions]

CWGC commemorate as 2 Lt

If you have his service papers/read them then you should be more on the ball than us. https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C1093590
