Worn out my googling finger trying to be sure where the Hood Battalion were on 30th December 1917. They had 24 killed, 18 name don Thiepval. Where they with Drake at Welsh Ride ?

Thanks for any help..trying to ascertain  where AB Alfred ELY met his end.

Yes Tony, they were with the Drake, Nelson and Hawke Battalions (189th Brigade) in the centre of the Division's line on Welsh Ridge.

That day and the next (31st Dec) they suffered

Officers 4 killed, 3 wounded and 2 missing

Other Ranks 24  killed, 124 wounded and 102 missing

Details from Len Sellers' book 'The Hood Battalion'

This was a serious attempt by the Germans against the 63rd (RN) Division's front; they are believed to have employed at least 15 battalions plus storm troops. Yes, the Drake Battalion was hit hard, but others also paid a high price over these two days. Jerrold writing in the divisional history mentions casualties (k, w & m) 63 officers and 1,355 men.
