I may be old and not very tech savvy, but I can’t find a site that holds MiD citations. Is there one ?

my grandfather  had two citations but I have no idea which battles/ skirmishes or even which year. Any help appreciated.

They are usually listed in the London Gazette, so searching its archives with your grandfather's name as a phrase may help. Or, since the Gazette's search filtering has rather gone to blazes since their upgrade a few years back, just a Google search on "grandfather's name" "London Gazette".

But don't expect too much: there often isn't a citation. "Richard William Marsh" "London Gazette" picks up my grandfather's MiD but it's one of a group: https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/issue/31638/supplement/13748/data.pdf - if I change the final number to call up page 13747 instead, I can make the vaguest guess as to what the action was, but no more.

Best of luck!

You will not normally find any type of citation or recommendation for a Great War MiD in the London Gazette as except for a few exceptions the citations were never published and the original recommendations no longer exist.  If you are lucky to have a unit history or war diary for the unit he was in you might find some indication of the reason he received the MiD, but from experience I would think that your chance of finding something for a particular soldier is probably less than one percent.

Sorry to piggy-back...

but the feeling is then that me looking for two MiDs for Roland James Milleville Raven-Hart [Major?] of Suffolk Regiment and Royal Engineers is most likely to be successful in Regimental Diaries?

Tony,

If you can let us have his name and any military details then we can perhaps have have a further look for you.

Grandfather was Laurence Buckley Burtt. Born 22 Dec 1877, died 1963. Served in PWO Civil Service Rifles prior to Boer War, then 58 Coy Imperial Yeomanry as L/Cpl. Became Sgt with 14th London Regiment, 56 Div, 1915, then commissioned. MC at Tadpole Copse with London Scottish. Demob 1919. Somewhere he was awarded 2 MiD, although History of PWO Civil Service Rifles, which I have, lists three. Three crossed out and two inserted in Grandpa’s handwriting. Burtt is left Officer in this undated photo of London Scottish group.

Hi Tonyb, I'm sure you've found these but having searched against your Grandfathers name I attach the two copies of the Supplement to the London Gazette found online. The first, 15th July 1915 lists his Commission, the second is dated 3rd June 1918. I note the spelling of Laurence is with a 'w' on both.
