rolt968 Posted 13 February , 2021 Share Posted 13 February , 2021 James Dakers Sheridan was killed serving with 1/5 Black Watch. Mych earlier he was a boy seaman. The following extracts are in fact his entire record. The section between is blank. For such a short record there are a number of entries I have not met before: 1. What does the entry in the Rating column mean? (It looks like something 3rd Class.) 2. What does "Non CS" mean? 3. Does "unfit" mean physically unfit or something like not likely to becoma an efficient seaman? 4. Did he get some kind of gratuity? (See the section which begins "10/- Grat..." at the bottom.) Many thanks in anticipation. RM

(See the section which begins "10/- Grat..." at the bottom.) 1. Domestic 3rd Class (Officers' stewards, officers' cooks and boy servants were 'domestics'). 2. Non-Continuous Service engagement. Not signed up for a specific CS engagement (typically 12 years). Often just for a single ship's commission but in this case he signed to age 23. 3. Medically unfit for service. 4. Looks like a 10 shillings gratuity on joining.

Thank you, Horatio, That's all very useful. I had wondered about Dom[estic] but I have on;y met it on women's services records. Non-continuous service is new to me. He may have tried the merchant service some time later. RM
