leibregiment Posted 29 January , 2021 Share Posted 29 January , 2021 While there is much on the Serbian Relief Fund of which this folded into (and UK medals were issued) , I wondered if anyone had undertaken any research into it? I currently have the British war medal to Duce Peters who was one of the five captured by the Bulgarians. ''Columbia Relief Expedition to Serbia'' was the brain child of a Professor Pupin of Columbia University in New York. Pupin's call for volunteers was heeded by twenty four American students of medicine that decided to join the Great War, not to fight but rather to help, mend and heal. Their decision was worth not just mere respect but complete admiration. Guided by the desire to help the Serbian people in their fight with epidemics, famine and war atrocities, willfully risking their lives they proved that fighting for ideals of humanity and justice has a higher universal meaning. Many of them, even after the official end of the humanitarian mission of the Expedition, decided to remain in Serbia and continue with the humanitarian work under the Red Cross". "The American doctor and writer Douglas Meriwether Dold and his friends; E. Colbi, G. R. Bell, E. Е. Childs, A. J. Cokefair, W. E. Dold, W. W. Eaton, G. K. Eads, A. E. Evans, A. M. Frantz, E. H. Jesup, P. F. Jones, L. L. Little, G. B. Logan, D. S. McChesney, W. H. Mallory, Duce Peters, W. Pritchett, P. H. Ryan, G. Sanders, P. G. R. Smith, N. A. Tanock, D. D. Warner, M. Banitah; from ''Columbia'' were true heroes that believed in the principles and ideals of justice and humanitarianism"
MaureenE Posted 29 January , 2021 Share Posted 29 January , 2021 The P F Jones in the above list was Paul Fortier Jones who wrote the book, available online With Serbia into Exile; an American's Adventures with the Army that Cannot Die by Fortier Jones 1916 Archive.org. He was one of the men recruited as drivers - each to have an automobile for carrying supplies together with an English-speaking Serb to act as an interpreter. Gardenerbill Posted 31 January , 2021 Share Posted 31 January , 2021 Apologies I can't add anything, but thank you for posting this. An aspect of the Macedonian campaign I was unaware of.
