General question - transfers into RAMC from other units

I have just started some research on a soldier who joined the DCLI but transferred to the RAMC. 

 

What medical skills were required in the RAMC for formerly regular soldiers? My man ended up as a Vicar after going to University. I'm wondering if some moral issues presented and he elected to help the effort in another way.

His name would help.  The date he joined DCLI is crucial- if a volunteer, then an unusual path, if a conscript he may notionally only been allocated to DCLI before proper placement when actually called up for service-  The date is all.
