James Brown Posted 17 November , 2002 Share Posted 17 November , 2002 On one of the Memorials I am reasearching, I have come across Captain James McNaught QWS. Am I correct in saying that this may be an abbreviation of The Queen's Royal West Surrey Regiment. I have traced down a Captain James MacG McNaught, who died in November 1919, and this is the closest I seem to be. I have no Next of Kin or Medal entitlement to guide me. The memorial is in Kilmaurs in the old boundary of Ayrshire. Many Thx James Brown
Paul Reed Posted 17 November , 2002 Share Posted 17 November , 2002 Yes, safe assumption that this refers to the Queen's Regiment; I have certainly seen that abbreviation used before, whether it is correct or not!
James Brown Posted 17 November , 2002 Author Share Posted 17 November , 2002 Thx Paul, I have not seen the abbreviation before. I shall keep searching until I can verify that this is the correct Captain. Regards James Brown
Bob Coulson Posted 18 November , 2002 Share Posted 18 November , 2002 It is possible that QWS could also designate Queens Westminster Rifles.
Paul Reed Posted 19 November , 2002 Share Posted 19 November , 2002 Never seen it used for that - normally with this unit it is QWR. But of course it could be a typo.
