Born: Q3 1897 (9c 538) - 15 August 1897 (on 1939 census)

Grandparents: John Henry Marshall (13/12/1835-11/11/1911) and Elizabeth Justice (1844-2/02/1907)

                         Married 13 January 1863 @ t. Edmunds Ch., Walesby, Nottinghamshire.

GPs' Children: John Henry Marshall (10 May 1863-14/07/1892), Charles Justice Marshall (22/01/1865-1924), George Herbert Marshall (23/12/1866-1926), Frederick Marshall (27/10/1869-25/10/1944), Kate Marshall (1872-1946).

Parents: Frederick Marshall (27/10/1869-25/10/1944) and Mary Dewis (1871-4/12/1907). 

              Married 25/12/1891 St Lukes, Dyers Hill, Sheffield.

Siblings: Thomas William Marshall (4/04/1892-26/07/1958), Frederick (1896- KIA 4/10/1917 - Y&L Regt).

Enlisted 28 August 1914 (SWB list)

Entered France 2 August 1915 (MIC). Entitled to WW1 trio (MIC).

7th (Service) Battalion (off web)

16.09.1914 Formed at Beverley, Yorkshire as part of the Second New Army (K2) in the 50th Brigade of the 17th Division, then moved to Wareham. May 1915 Moved to Romsey.

14.07.1915 Mobilised for war and landed at Boulogne and engaged in various actions on the Western Front including;

During 1916: The Battle of Albert, The Battle of Delville Wood.

During 1917: The First and Second Battles of the Scarpe, The Capture of Roeux, The First and Second Battles of Passchendaele.

During 1918: The Battle of St Quentin, The Battle of Bapaume, The Battle of Amiens, The Battle of Albert, The Battle of Bapaume, The Battle of Havrincourt, The Battle of Epehy, The Battle of Cambrai 1918, The pursuit to the Selle, The Battle of the Selle, The Battle of the Sambre. 11.11.1918, Ended the war in France, Aulnoye.

 

MM in LG 31173, 11 February 1919 - from Sheffield. Schedule no. 201792

MM for Battle of Amiens - August/September 1918.

Discharged 29 May 1919 aged 22. SWB B332546

 

Married: Sarah Palfreyman Q2 1923 Sheffield (b.1897 Barnsley)

Son: Charles Arthur Marshall b. 4 Dec 1923, d.2001 Sheffield.

Son: Henry Roy Marshall b.7 March 1927, d.1983 aged 55 Sheffield.

1939 Census: 19 Hackthorn Road Sheffield. Fruit Salesman, DoB 15 August 1897.

                        Wife Sarah (b. 6 June 1897). 

                        Sons Charles A. (b.4 Nov 1923), Harry R. (b.1 Mar 1927)

Died: Q2 1961 aged 64 - Sheffield

 The 5 7th Bn. EYR MMs listed in WD 27 September 1918 (WO-95-2003-5) are in the same LG, but they have later schedule numbers:

Could the first group be for August 1918 and the second group for September 1918?

Hospital Admission 2nd General Hospital

6845 Pte Marshall, 7th E Yorks, age 19, 3yrs completed svc and 27 months field force,

Fractured Ilium Blade.

Orig Admission 29/9/17 ,  to sick convoy 8/10/17, Hospital Ship Essequibo

 

His name I couldn't see in casualty lists for this so perhaps an accident ?

Thanks Charlie that roughly ties in with his enlistment date of 28 August 1914 (aged 17) SWB entry off Ancestry:
