John O'Neill VC MM Medaille Militaire (France).

On 18/2/22 he married Kathleen O'Neill Flanagan, they lived at 19 Moore St, Hamilton and had 2 daughters. In 1922 the leinsters was disbanded and he worked in the coalmines.

On 25/4/1923 he enlisted as an aircraftsman in the RAF.

On 26/7/39 he was discharged from the RAF.

On the outbreak of the war he was commissioned into the Pioneer Corps serving with 259 Coy based at Huyton and was engaged onescort duties of internees to Australia on the Dunera.

He died suddenly in Hoylake from heart trouble on 16/10/42.

He is buried in Trinity Road Churchyard Hoylake, Cheshire.

Thank you Kevin.

I knew about his VC, and the Leinsters being disbanded in 1922.

I then lost sight of him until 1940 when he has "rather prominent" mention in books etc about the "Dunera".

Yes his behaviour was quite topical in light of the recent courts martial of the 3 men from the RRF.

That's exactly it Kevin.

I have even heard it said that it was only his VC that saved him from the C/M that others on the "Dunera" faced.
