SMS Emden's crew list?

Charlie,

Mate amazing what you find.

I also could be wrong about these three men and they may also be in a prize crew when captured and or died?

Of cause not all those who escaped were on Emden at that time.

Another area to look at?

Cheers

Mate,

On checking the Geheime Marine Verlustliste, it includes some I didn't have from the Emden;

Lauterbach Christian Eduard Augustus Julius    ObLtzS deR Marine    SMS Emden    1915-    (born at Rostock ) zurückgeht (going back) and zurückgehalten (held back)

But no idea on how they became PoW's and or deid

Cheers

There is a book available online

Lauterbach of the China Sea : the Escapes and Adventures of a Seagoing Falstaff by Lowell Thomas, 1930 Archive.org. A China Sea Captain, during WW1 Julius Lauterbach was navigator on the German SMS Emden which attacked oil tanks at Madras. He was later a prisoner in Singapore at Tangling prison camp page 95, and helped ferment dissatisfaction which led to the Singapore Mutiny, during which he escaped and fled, initially to Sumatra.

Cheers

Dear All, and Steve,

Here, for your general information, are various portraits of Helmuth von Mücke (1881-1957): pre-Great War, and after his return.

Kapitänleutnant v. Mücke held the EKI and EKII, the Kronenorden IV Klasse, and various other decorations.

Kindest regards,

Mates,

Some more checking found this man in Ottoman documents

Hohlen A    Masch maat Marine    SMS "Emden" part of the Ayesha detachment shown SS "General" 17-6-15

He then disappears as many of these men did, but he looks like he stayed in Turkey instead of returning home and coming back as a number did.

Cheers

Mates,

I found what is shown as a Crew list in the Trove reported in "The West Australian" newspaper dated 6 Aug 1915 of those who arrived in Istanbul in May 1915

While the names appear a translated German so they maybe not 100 % correct, also most ranks and different then shown in other works.

The third man killed in the fight 1 April 1915 is reported as Firemen Louiz, when his name was (Heizer) Friedrich Laing

They miss some names and the spelling of other needs some checking.

I'll again list all the names I have with the new men, which makes around 59 men, not all are of those that arrived in Istanbul in 1915;

Steve you are so awesome for sharing all this work…bless you!  What amazing stories of this brave and valiant crew!

you have proven one thing, at least one German got back to Germany and became a submariner! So it is possible,

Learning all this really makes me study this particular photo.  I wonder where and when it was taken.  The one gentleman resembles Mulcke.  But Frederich never put any notes on the back of this one.  In any case, so interesting and please continue to share!

Mate,

Of cause all other ranks of the Emden's crew were awarded an EK 2 for there service on that ship dated Feb 1915, while officers were awarded a EK I.

So thats one way to check those post that date.

Also all crew members were granted the name Emden, as part of there names, so again check German directories to find names?

But we should not forget a new Emden (2) was built and so named and saw service during the war.

Yes, but that is my Great Uncle back row third from the left,   He only served on the original Emden (and the submarine he perished on) this is from his personal photos.  So this photo is from the original Emden and this crew served in Tsingtao.  Several are clearly close comrades of his as they are in other photos.

Bob,

Yes sorry I missed what you was saying.

While Freidrich was on Emden Pre war (the card shows 1913) but I can find no record of him during 1914-15 on Emden?

Did he return before 1914 to Germany, I am sorry I have not idea, but seams more likely, then him being on Emden during the fight and escape where he name is not mentioned in any of the sources I so far have found?

But you never know so I'll see what turns up.

A number of men that did make it back home did join the U Boat Waffe, like

Süß (Suss) Wilhelm    ObMatrose Marine    SMS Emden to U Boots-Flottilla- Mediterranean Sea    1915-    escaped to Yeman with ObLtzS Mücke arrived Turkey 23-5-15 (not identified)? shown awarded EK II & EK I and Ottoman War Medal

I have no Idea what boats he served in, and a number of the names I can't confirm show later service in U Boats.

Yes I believe you are correct that he probably returned home before hostilities broke but it must have been really close.

As discussed earlier in this post, Frederich Loh, perished on U-59.  He kept a picture record of his trip leaving Bremerhaven and going to Tsingtao and numbered the pictures on the back.  So I can track him from Gibraltar, to Cairo, to Columbo to Tsingtao.

He chronicles the shelling done on the Chinese coast, naval action with the SMS Gneisenau and other ships, the Emden voyage to Japan, literally all the events the Emden was involved in but then radio silence (or picture silence) until he is suddenly wearing his “Uboats Flotille” hat.

So odd to me that he would not chronicle his way home, but I have no record.  And most of the relations that would have known something are no longer alive.

One of his last series of photos is of the beached SMS Taku which I know happened on October 22nd 1913 so he was still there at the time.

He also has a photo of the Konigen Louise, a transport ship in harbor at Tsingtao so perhaps he got a nicer trip home and thus did not document his time but slept in a nice room😂

in any case, he had an eventful time aboard the Emden and appeared to be a torpedo loader.  Perhaps that is what made him a natural fit for sub duty.

If you ever come by his name please post.  If you are ever looking for a unique photo ask and I will look for it.

cheers!

(One more addition…he has pictures from the port at Tsingtao of the departing German steamer Patricia.  This ship was requisitioned on Jan 12 1914 for duty in Tsingtao as a troop ship. So he was still there then, but perhaps he came home on her as well….)

  • 2 years later...

My late father who served in the New Zealand navy in WWII in the Pacific War against Japan had passed to him a script written by an English observer / witness on shore at the time the SMS EMDEN was engaged with the HMAS SYDNEY in a battle in the Cocos (Keeling) Islands, which saw the SMS EMDEN severely damage and run aground.

I also have a brass plaque (measuring [approx] 9cms x 6cms) engraved with the name of a german serviceman. The plaque was taken from the wreck of the SMS EMDEN following the battle.

In addition, I also hold a "canteen coin" from the vessel.

In the past (2009) I have written on several occasions to the German Embassy in Canberra, located in the Australia Capital Territory, Australia and sent a copy of the plaque, enquiring if I can send / return it to the family of the person named thereon. I failed to get any meaningful response other than my enquiry had been on-sent to the Bundesarchiv - Militararchiv located Wiesentalstrasse 10, 79115 Freiburg, Germany. I was informed at the time that war records were destroyed during the final stages of WWII. However, I was advised that if any information was located, they would be in touch with me. I have heard nothing and not having anywhere else to go, I simply gave up my search.

Since that time, I have wondered if I should try  continue to pursue my enquiry as I would very much like to return the plaque to the descendants of the german serviceman.

I believe, the name on the plaque is SCHMIDT along with his rank. I have given these items over to my son (along with his grandfathers medals and war time memorabilia) and have requested that he send me a copy of the plaque, at which time I can on-send it to you should you have an interest in such
