Sgt Stripes Posted 14 December , 2020 Share Posted 14 December , 2020 Hi. By chance does anyone know which Royal Navy ship fired the most shells in action during WW1.
James A Pratt III Posted 21 December , 2020 Share Posted 21 December , 2020 I think I have read that the Battlecruiser HMS Imflexible may have fired the most rounds of any large British warship during WW I
Falloden Posted 22 December , 2020 Share Posted 22 December , 2020 Whilst chasing von Spee's squadron at the Falklands, HMS Inflexible fired as many as 600 twelve inch shells during the pursuit of the Gneisenau, exhausting most of her magazine stock. I believe that there was some criticism of the amount of shells expended.
MikB Posted 23 December , 2020 Share Posted 23 December , 2020 IMO firing in anger doesn't really count - it's hits that do. Before her disastrous end, HMS Invincible did some of the best shooting of any ship at Jutland, with (IIRC) 8 hits on KM ships from 48 rounds fired. OTOH I think there was another RN battlecruiser that fired over 200 rounds of heavy calibre and hit nothing.
