Smallick Posted 29 November , 2020 Share Posted 29 November , 2020 Hopefully someone can give me some help. I have found an ancestor served for a few years between 1917 & 19 as a cook. My research has revealed that Vivid 1 was, at the time, a shore base. There are several other names listed but one of them he served for just one day so just want to understand what it is telling me. All the info is on the attachment, so I wont repeat it here. Many thanks in advance. Simon
horatio2 Posted 29 November , 2020 Share Posted 29 November , 2020 (edited) He served in (in order):- HMS VIVID - RN Barracks, Devonport. (He was a Devonport-based rating.) HMS GLOWWORM - a gunboat based on (again in order): HMS HALCYON (Lowestoft base); HMS PEMBROKE (Chatham base); thereafter GLOWWORM appears to have been parented by HMS M.25 (a monitor) operating in the White Sea (North Russia). He was demobilised from Devonport Barracks (VIVID) on return from Russsia. There are log books for M.25 and GLOWWORM for 1918-19 in North Russia:- https://www.naval-history.net/OWShips-WW1-03-HMS_M.25.htm http://www.naval-history.net/OWShips-WW1-11-HMS_Glowworm.htm More on GLOWWORM here:- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Insect-class_gunboat GLOWWORM, river gunboat, Insect-class, ordered 2.15 as "China Gunboat" for service on Danube. Served elsewhere, P.94 (1.16), P.93 (1.18). Launched 5.2.16 Barclay Curle. 645 tons, 237(oa), 230(pp)x36x4ft. TE 2000ihp,14kts, twin screws in tunnels. Armament: 2-6in, 2-12pdr. North Sea 1916-18, then White Sea. Sold 9.28 at Malta. Edited 29 November , 2020 by horatio2
horatio2 Posted 29 November , 2020 Share Posted 29 November , 2020 (edited) For more on the part of M.25 and GLOWWORM in the North Russia campaign, see [GWF member] Damien Wright's "Churchill's Secret War with Lenin". It gives good coverage of the operations of GLOWWORM and her sister gunboats on the Dvina River and at Archangel. Note also that your ancestor volunteered for the RN well before he was called forward to serve on 22 March 1917. In the interim period he was enrolled onto the 'Y' list of the RNVR, as Y.19720, and continued his civilian employment until called up. horatio2 Posted 29 November , 2020 Share Posted 29 November , 2020 The notation P.I.C. 411573 - 27/6/1919 refers to the Protection and Identity Certificate which was issued to him on demob.
