Paul Chapman Posted 27 November , 2020 Share Posted 27 November , 2020 Good afternoon: Can anyone shed any light on the events / actions / operations of 8th Rifle Brigade during January 1916 ? I have the Naval & Military War Diaries DVD Rom but, search as I might, I cannot find the diaries for 8 R.B. for this month (from October 1915 through to March 1916 they are missing). Any assistance anyone is able to provide would be greatly appreciated.

What I'm looking for is the War Diary for the month of January which, although available from the NA, is only obtainable by purchase. Having spent £400 on the N & M DVD Rom, I am at a loss as to why this documentation / information is not included thereon.

War diairies and other documentation are currently free to download from the National Archive. If you haven't already got an account you just need to register with them, and even that can be done as part of placing your first order. No bank account or other financial information required. Acknown Posted 28 November , 2020 Share Posted 28 November , 2020 (edited) Or here it is on Ancestry: https://www.ancestry.co.uk/imageviewer/collections/60779/images/43849_1895_1-00000?ssrc=&backlabel=Return. Acknown Addition: Ah, same pages missing on this copy. Edited 28 November , 2020 by Acknown
stiletto_33853 Posted 28 November , 2020 Share Posted 28 November , 2020 Paul, Not the first time the N & M DVD has come into question. They seem to have exactly the same gaps as Ancestry does, strange that!!! I brought the matter up at Kew, who clearly state that Ancestry etc have exactly the same material they have at Kew. Read what you will into that but the material is there at Kew. If you would like the diary for January send me a message with your e-mail address and I will send it over to you. For the amount of info I expect to be able to draw from this it is not cost effective. And, I should dearly love to know why all diaries for Australian and Canadian units are on line, free gratis, plus a wealth of other information, service records, etc., inc. New Zealand, but we here in the UK not only have to pay for info regarding British units, troops, but are expected to be grateful for the privilege of being mugged off. GraemeClarke Posted 29 November , 2020 Share Posted 29 November , 2020 (edited) Paul, As PRC (Peter) says in his post above, (and which I intimated in my post but accept I did not say) the War Diary is blinkin' FREE, but you have to register. I cannot see the problem. Far from a mugging !!!!! Graeme Edited 29 November , 2020 by GraemeClarke
pudsey63 Posted 27 March , 2021 Share Posted 27 March , 2021 One page covering 18-24 Jan 1918 is misfiled and can be found in July 1918.
