Sgt Stripes Posted 23 November , 2020 Share Posted 23 November , 2020 Hi. I am researching 614116 Pte Ernest Treays 2/19th London Regiment. I have found very little on him however he is listed as wounded 7.4.1917 while serving in Salonika. They served in Salonika from November 1919 till June 1917 suffering 25 casualties consisting of 1 KIA, 5 DOWs, 18 wounded and only one man sick. The one man KIA plus the 4 of the DOWs along with six of the wounded occurred on 5.4.1917. Does anyone know what happened on that day plus was it possible that Pte Treays was also wounded on that day . The one killed was 611291 Pte E H CHURCH and the four men DOWs were 613931 Pte R S PERFECT, 613910 Pte F G BATCHELOR, 613935 Pte A SIMMONS and 613877 Pte H T HART. Gardenerbill Posted 24 November , 2020 Share Posted 24 November , 2020 Hi sarge, I have the following in my notes but I can't find the source: 'On the 5th April a German Bombing raid on the railhead at KARASOULI set fire to and gutted some buildings, destroying a quantity of ammunition. This would prove to be the last bombing raid by the German squadron' The German Bomber Squadron had arrived in February 1917 and carried out bombing raids targeting the camps near Salonika, there is some information on the raids in ''Under the Devil's Eye' Alan Wakefield & Simon Moody' pages 186 and 187. Gardenerbill Posted 24 November , 2020 Share Posted 24 November , 2020 Also in 'Under the Devil's Eye' pages 61 and 62 there is a description of 2/15th London Regiment's move up country with 60th Division, arriving at Karasouli 10th March. Sgt Stripes Posted 24 November , 2020 Author Share Posted 24 November , 2020 (edited) Many Thanks Gardenerbill for this information. It does look like the 2/19th were in the area of Karasouli and suffered casualties in the air raid. The men who died are all buried in Karasouli cemetery including the only other Battalion fatality 612685 Pte E J DOPSON who died on 18th May 1917 from accidental injuries . As for Pte TREAYS wounded 7.4.1917 i still think his wounds had something to do with the Air raid. At least i now know the area they operated in. I think I will ask another question in the war in the air section and see if anyone has anymore information on the air raid.
