MaureenE Posted 21 November , 2020 Share Posted 21 November , 2020 Findmypast, pay website, has recently added a new dataset "British Red Cross & Order Of St John Enquiry List, Wounded & Missing, 1914-1919" https://search.findmypast.co.uk/search-world-Records/british-red-cross-and-order-of-st-john-enquiry-list-wounded-and-missing-1914-1919 sourced from information from Naval & Military Press. What is probably the same dataset is currently available on the pay website Fold3. There is more about these records on the FIBIS Fibiwiki page British Army, section Records/Other sources/WW1 British Red Cross & Order Of St John Enquiry Lists For Wounded And Missing https://wiki.fibis.org/w/British_Army#WW1_British_Red_Cross_.26_Order_Of_St_John_Enquiry_Lists_For_Wounded_And_Missing The main advantage appears to be that there are usually regimental details not generally available elsewhere, such as Battery number for Royal Artillery soldiers, and Company details for Infantry soldiers. Also Findmypast has also added a database currently available elsewhere for free, "British Armed Forces Soldiers' Wills 1850-1986" See the FIBIS Fibiwiki page British Army, section Records/Other sources/Soldiers’ wills https://wiki.fibis.org/w/British_Army#Soldiers.E2.80.99_wills Cheers Maureen
John(txic) Posted 21 November , 2020 Share Posted 21 November , 2020 Had the same e-mail myself, Maureene. What it doesn't say is that if you search for a Soldier's Will, it takes you to the GRO webpage - and it costs £1.50 a go to order a copy. I've taken a punt on one to see what I get for the money. Chris_Baker Posted 21 November , 2020 Share Posted 21 November , 2020 (edited) The same database (for the wills) has been available free of charge for quite some years now: https://probatesearch.service.gov.uk/#soldiers The wills of Irish soldiers are available, including a downloadable copy of the will, free of charge: http://soldierswills.nationalarchives.ie/search/sw/home.jsp The wills of Scottish soldiers are available (fee) via Scotlands People. Keith_history_buff Posted 16 December , 2020 Share Posted 16 December , 2020 I'm late seeing this among some FMP search results. Thank you, Maureen, for your comments on this recently available prisoner of war dataset. Best wishes Keith
